John Mulaney deeply related to Matthew Perry’s addiction

John Mulaney has been mourning the death of Matthew Perry and shared how he “really identified” with the former “Friends” star’s addiction journey. Speaking to Variety, the comedian described struggles with addiction, comparing life to a wobbly table at a restaurant, and how drugs can kick the legs out from under that table. Mulaney said he was thinking about Perry a lot after reading his memoir, “Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing.”

Mulaney, who went to rehab in 2020 due to addiction cocaine and prescription pills, channeled his experiences into his Netflix stand-up special, “Baby J,” which was released in April. He described his goal as making the special as funny as possible without dramatic pauses.

Perry passed away on October 28 at the age of 54. He released his memoir the following month, after experiencing years of addiction to alcohol and Vicodin. He shared in the memoir that he had completed 15 rehab stints, and last October stated he was 18 months sober. Perry’s cause of death is pending toxicology results, but it is believed that he suffered cardiac arrest.

The news of Perry’s death has shocked many and as it has come during a time when addiction and death touched the authorities. Mulaney stated he really identified with Perry, and now has the chance to mourn, as both had an addiction journey and recovery process. The Post has reached out to Mulaney’s reps for comment on the situation.
