ULM’s Eunice Ilunga Mbuyi has been named the 2024 Louisiana Sports Writers Association Field Athlete of the Year, becoming the first female All-American for ULM in over 30 years with her impressive triple jump performance. Ilunga Mbuyi also excelled in the long jump, posting the second-highest mark in Louisiana. Her teammate, Claudine Raud-Gumiel, dominated the heptathlon, while discus thrower Wardell Glaspie recorded the third-longest toss in the state.
LSU athletes also shined in the awards, with Godson Oghenebrume named the top track athlete and Claudio Romero named top field athlete. Freshmen Jaiden Reid and Tima Godbless, along with newcomer Myles Thomas, also earned recognition. On the women’s side, Brianna Lyston was named the top track athlete, while Eunice Ilunga Mbuyi received the field athlete award. Estel Valeanu was named newcomer of the year.
The coaches, including LSU’s Dennis Shaver, Xavier’s Yhann Plummer, and NSU’s Mike Heimerman, were also commended for their successful seasons. LSU athletes dominated the season, setting numerous records and achieving multiple All-American honors. The 2024 outdoor season showcased impressive performances from athletes across Louisiana, with LSU and ULM athletes standing out among the competition.
