U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson has appointed Republican Louisiana Congressman Clay Higgins to a bipartisan task force that will investigate the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump. The 13-person task force includes seven Republicans and six Democrats and will have complete control and jurisdiction over the investigation in the House. Higgins expressed his commitment to finding answers and ensuring accountability in a statement to USA Today Network.
The task force’s goal is to uncover detailed information about the security failures that allowed the shooter to gain elevated rooftop access near Trump during an outdoor campaign rally in Pennsylvania. Former Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned in the aftermath of the incident. Higgins, who serves on the House Oversight Committee and House Armed Services Committee, is the only representative from Louisiana on the task force.
Johnson and House Democratic Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries announced the formation of the task force and expressed confidence in its ability to quickly uncover the truth and prevent similar incidents in the future. The group will have subpoena power and will take control of all pending House committee investigations related to the assassination attempt for the remainder of the Congress.
Higgins said he is honored to have been chosen for the high-profile assignment and is prepared to use every available resource to ensure transparency and accountability in the investigation. The American people are demanding answers, and Higgins and his bipartisan colleagues are committed to delivering the truth.
