AG: Cameo App Found in Violation of NJ Law by Providing Personalized Celebrity Videos

Cameo, a popular social app allowing fans to purchase personalized video messages from celebrities, has settled a dispute with New Jersey and 29 other states by agreeing to clearly label videos endorsing products. Launched in 2017, the app faced legal issues for failing to disclose paid videos promoting businesses and products. Officials found that Cameo did not provide refunds to users who mistakenly paid for the Business Cameo feature, leading to endorsements without proper disclosure. As part of the settlement, Cameo will now implement a watermark on paid videos, establish compliance monitoring, and develop reporting mechanisms. New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin emphasized the importance of clear distinctions between personal and promotional content, as well as transparent pricing. The settlement ensures Cameo’s compliance with state consumer protection laws and federal endorsement disclosure requirements. The app’s failure to disclose paid promotions resulted in users viewing videos that appeared as positive reviews without acknowledgment of payment. The multi-state complaint involved legal action by states including Florida, Illinois, New York, and Texas, as well as many others. Cameo has agreed to take steps to prevent future violations and provide a clear system for compliance with legal requirements.
