Massive landslides strike Kerala, multiple fatalities reported and hundreds remain stranded

Heavy rain resulted in landslides in the hilly Wayanad district of Kerala, leading to the deaths of at least 10 people with hundreds feared trapped. The landslides hit Meppadi and Chooralmala in the early hours, hindering rescue efforts due to ongoing heavy rain. Indian Air Force helicopters were deployed for rescue operations.

Reports indicate that many houses, vehicles, and shops were submerged in mud and water, with the main bridge in Chooralmala destroyed. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his distress over the situation and assured Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan of all possible help. Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, representing the Wayanad constituency, also expressed sadness and hoped for the safe rescue of those trapped.

India’s meteorological agency has predicted more rain in the region, as monsoon season continues. Climate change experts warn that the increasing frequency of fatal floods and landslides in recent years is exacerbated by climate change. Monsoon rains are vital for replenishing water supplies but also bring destruction, highlighting the need for proactive measures to mitigate the impact of such natural disasters.
