Vice President Kamala Harris is the only candidate seeking the Democratic presidential nomination after a deadline passed with no one else qualifying. 99% of delegates signed Harris’ nominating petition, solidifying her position as the nominee. There will be no internal competition, avoiding a messy fight within the party. Delegates will begin voting virtually to formalize Harris’ nomination before an August deadline. The nomination process was rewritten and open to any candidate, but was quickly seen as favoring Harris. Marianne Williamson, an author, considered challenging Harris but ultimately decided against it. Delegates will participate in a virtual roll call vote to ratify Harris as the nominee, with a ceremonial in-person roll call planned for the convention. Despite changes to the nomination process, super delegates will still be able to vote for Harris, as she already has overwhelming support. Ohio’s ballot access deadline prompted Democrats to speed up the nomination process, as conservative groups threatened litigation if they missed the deadline. The party aims to avoid any legal challenges that could impact their ability to be on the ballot in Ohio in the fall.
