Temperatures soar at Paris Olympics as crowds feel the heat following rainy start of Games.

The 2024 Olympics, which began with a rain-soaked opening ceremony, are now facing a heat wave on Tuesday, with most of France under a heat wave warning. Temperatures in Paris and its surrounding areas are expected to climb to 35 degrees Celsius or higher. Visitors and residents have been urged to stay hydrated and seek shade to beat the heat.

In response to the soaring temperatures, stations spraying mist have been set up at La Concorde urban park, which includes skateboarding and BMX freestyle cycling events. Paris’ train and metro operator has announced plans to distribute over 2.5 million containers of water at more than 70 train stations, stops, and bus stations.

The extreme heat is expected to be even more intense in southern France, including Marseille, the city hosting soccer and sailing events. France’s national weather agency has warned that heat waves are becoming increasingly intense, frequent, early, and long-lasting due to climate change. Before 1989, such high temperatures were observed once every five years on average, but since 2000, they have occurred annually. The agency predicts that this trend will continue to worsen in the future.

As athletes and spectators brace for the scorching temperatures, the organizers of the Olympics are taking measures to ensure everyone stays safe and comfortable during the heat wave.
