A recent report by Superside has revealed that several emojis are at risk of extinction due to decreased global usage. The study, titled “The Emoji Report: Which emojis are going extinct?”, analyzed the usage and search volume of the top 100 emojis worldwide, identifying 14 emojis that have seen a decline in popularity. The ‘okay hand symbol’ topped the endangered list, dropping 66 places in popularity rankings since 2013.
Other emojis facing extinction include the ‘flushed face’ and the ‘person raising both hands in celebration’. The decline in usage is attributed to the dominance of newer emojis and the unfortunate association of some emojis with hate groups. For example, the ‘okay hand symbol’ has been linked to white supremacy, with some online using it as a “sincere expression of white supremacy”, according to the Anti-Defamation League (ADL).
The study also found that men are less likely to use emojis compared to women, and emoji usage decreases with age. Gen Z in particular is gravitating towards newer, more relatable emojis or avoiding them altogether, finding some emojis cringe-worthy and “very millennial”.
The decrease in certain emoji use is a global phenomenon, with different countries leading the way in divesting in specific emojis. The findings of the report highlight changing trends in emoji use and the evolving perceptions of these digital symbols. Whether you love emojis or find them cringe-worthy, it’s clear that the landscape of digital communication is constantly shifting.
