Last Generation, the Austrian branch of the climate action group, has disbanded after facing challenges with their disruptive forms of protest. The group, known for blocking traffic and causing disruptions, announced their decision in a letter addressed to society, citing a lack of support and success in their actions. They expressed frustration with Austria’s lack of progress in addressing climate change, accusing the government of wanting to “remain in fossil ignorance.”
Despite the disbandment, Last Generation did not specify how they plan to continue their mission of climate activism. The group faced legal troubles, with several members under investigation for damaging public property and forming a criminal organization. Their tactics, such as attempting to pour paint on Gustav Klimt’s painting “Death and Life,” were seen as controversial and often negatively perceived by the general public.
Communications expert Jakob-Moritz Eberl noted that while Last Generation aimed to draw attention to climate issues, their stunts did not always result in political action. The group had been active in Austria since 2021 and is primarily active in Germany, Italy, and Poland, with a history of disruptive protests that have led to arrests and criminal charges.
Despite disbanding in Austria, it remains to be seen how Last Generation will continue their activism in other countries. Their decision to end protests highlights the challenges and complexities of advocating for climate action through disruptive means.
