From being silenced by the Taliban to performing at Carnegie Hall: Musicians defy the odds.

The Afghan Youth Orchestra, part of the Afghanistan National Institute of Music (ANIM), will perform at Carnegie Hall this week in a significant triumph over the Taliban’s attempts to silence them. Established in 2010, ANIM has been a symbol of resilience, combining Afghan culture with Western music and welcoming children from diverse backgrounds. The Taliban viewed the school as a threat and targeted it multiple times, including a deadly suicide bombing in 2014. Following the Taliban’s resurgence in 2021, ANIM evacuated its staff and students with the help of several governments, re-establishing in Braga, Portugal.

Despite the joy of performing at Carnegie Hall, there is a sense of bittersweetness among the musicians as their families remain trapped in Afghanistan where the Taliban have banned music and arts. For them, the concert is not just about showcasing Afghan music but also a protest against the silencing of millions of Afghans.

The resilience and determination of the Afghan youth orchestra in the face of adversity is a powerful message of resistance and hope for Afghanistan. The concert at Carnegie Hall represents a beacon of what Afghanistan could have been and what it could still become, showcasing the voices and talents of a generation determined not to be silenced.
