After initially not qualifying for the final, four runners were advanced by the referee, including Hay who automatically advanced as the seventh-place finisher. Mills approached Hay after the race, exchanging harsh words and pointing his finger in anger. The 5,000-meter final will now feature 20 athletes competing for the podium, including two-time reigning world champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen of Norway who had the fastest qualifying times. Ingebrigtsen just missed the podium in the 1,500-meter final in Tokyo. Team USA will be represented by Grant Fisher, the 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter U.S. champion, as well as Graham Blanks who finished sixth in the first heat after avoiding the trip-up with Mills.
