In the recent primary elections, Rep. Cori Bush, a member of the progressive “squad” of lawmakers, has lost to St. Louis County Prosecutor Wesley Bell. Bell is expected to win Missouri’s 1st Congressional District in November. United Democracy Project, a super PAC associated with the pro-Israel lobby, spent almost $9 million attacking Bush and supporting Bell. The primary was notable for its divisions on Israel, with Bush criticizing the Israeli government’s response to Hamas attacks. Both candidates also launched other attacks against each other, with Bell questioning Bush’s effectiveness as a congresswoman and Bush focusing on police reform following the killing of Michael Brown. Despite her loss, Bush remains committed to advocating for progressive policies and community change.
In other races, Democratic Rep. Elissa Slotkin and GOP former Rep. Mike Rogers have won their primaries in Michigan’s Senate race, setting the stage for a competitive general election. Michigan, a crucial state in national politics, will be closely watched in the battles for the Senate and the White House. Slotkin’s Senate run has opened up her 7th District, where former state senators Tom Barrett and Curtis Hertel are vying for the seat. In Kansas, physician Prasnath Reddy has been chosen to challenge Democratic Rep. Sharice Davids in the 3rd District. Additionally, Republican Joe Kent will face Democratic Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez in a rematch in Washington’s 3rd District, which is a top target for Republicans. The general elections in these and other districts across the country will play a crucial role in shaping the balance of power in Congress.
