Former President Donald Trump’s campaign has claimed that it was hacked by an Iranian group in June around the same time Trump was choosing a Vice Presidential nominee. The hack was first reported by Politico, who received emails from an anonymous account sharing internal documents from the Trump campaign in July. These documents included research papers on potential running mates, including Ohio Sen. JD Vance who eventually became the GOP vice presidential nominee. The hack was believed to be an attempt to interfere with the 2024 election and sow chaos in the Democratic process. Microsoft released a report linking the hack to an Iranian group connected with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The Trump campaign accused the media of assisting America’s enemies by publishing the hacked documents. Iran’s mission to the United Nations did not comment on the allegations. Politico, who received the leaked documents, was warned not to ask about the source of the information as it would compromise the leaker. A spokesperson for Politico did not respond to requests for comments. It is unclear how the hack will impact the ongoing political landscape and the upcoming elections.
