A recent outbreak of mpox, previously known as monkeypox, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has prompted a response from local health workers who are already overwhelmed by ongoing challenges. The World Health Organization has declared an international health emergency as cases of mpox have been detected in multiple countries on the African continent and beyond. In DRC, the disease has spread to all 26 provinces, with over 15,000 cases and 548 deaths reported so far this year.
Health facilities like the Nyiragongo General Referral Hospital in Goma are treating mpox patients, with medical staff facing shortages of medicine and dealing with ongoing conflict in the region. Despite the challenges, health workers remain dedicated to caring for patients, like Madam Nyota Joyeuse, who are receiving treatment for mpox in isolation tents.
The disease causes symptoms similar to malaria initially, but can progress to a severe rash and even death in some cases. Health workers are urging people to seek treatment early to prevent complications. The current situation in eastern DRC, with conflict and multiple disease outbreaks, has created additional challenges for responding to the mpox outbreak.
Medical NGO Doctors Without Borders is providing support in the fight against mpox in various provinces, but fears that the current conflict in the region could hinder efforts to combat the disease. Despite the difficult circumstances, health workers are committed to treating patients and mitigating the spread of mpox, while also addressing other health crises in the area.
