Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has stated that the military incursion into Russia’s Kursk region is aimed at creating a buffer zone to prevent further attacks from Moscow. The operation, launched on August 6th, is focused on destroying Russian war potential and conducting counteroffensive actions. Ukrainian forces have advanced deep into the region, facing little resistance and capturing hundreds of prisoners.
The goal of creating a buffer zone in Kursk was clarified by Zelenskiy in a recent address, praising the achievements of the Ukrainian forces in the region. The Institute for the Study of War has observed rapid advances by Ukraine in Kursk, including the destruction of key bridges to disrupt Moscow’s supply routes.
Ukraine has captured over 150 Russian prisoners of war in the military operation in Kursk, with many being young conscripts who reportedly do not want to fight. Russia has denied reports that the attack on Kursk has derailed talks with Ukraine on halting strikes on energy and power targets.
In May, Russian President Vladimir Putin had stated that Moscow’s offensive in Ukraine’s north-eastern Kharkiv region aimed to create a buffer zone in response to Ukrainian shelling of Russian territory. The ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia continues to escalate, with both sides engaged in military operations and talks of potential ceasefire agreements being derailed.
