The Battle for Control of History: Ukrainian Artists Resisting Through Documentary Films

Kyiv was expected to fall in three days, but three years later the Ukrainian resistance against the Russian invasion persists. Filmmaker David Gutnik, of Ukrainian descent, raises questions about Ukrainian identity in the face of war. His documentary “Rule of Two Walls” focuses on Ukrainian artists on the frontlines, fighting to preserve culture and identity against Russian aggression.

The film features artists like Bogdana Davydiuk and Kinder Album, who create art amidst the chaos of war, as well as rapper Stepan Burban, who uses music to express resistance. Gutnik and his team become part of this resistance, capturing the experience of displacement through their filmmaking.

Initially focused on Ukrainian refugees fleeing the war, Gutnik shifted his focus to the artists preserving cultural identity in Lviv Municipal Art Center. The film explores the war waged against art, with bombing of theatres and museums as a strategic erasure of history and culture. Gutnik emphasizes the importance of acknowledging genocide and the role of culture in shaping identity.

Gutnik challenges audiences to confront the horrors of war, emphasizing the need to name and acknowledge genocide to avoid complicity. “Rule of Two Walls” serves as a powerful reminder of the impact of war on culture and identity, and the importance of preserving both in the face of conflict.
