Hurricane Hone, currently a Category 1 storm with maximum sustained winds of 85 mph, is gradually moving away from the Big Island of Hawaii. The storm is expected to bring gusty winds and widespread rain to the region, with a tropical storm warning still in effect for Hawaii County. Residents could see as much as 12 inches of rain and flooding, particularly in south-facing slopes. “Life-threatening” surf is also expected. Flash flood warnings are in place for most of the island until 12:15 p.m. local time, with flights being canceled at Hilo International Airport and over 21,300 utility customers without power. Social media videos show trees shaking in the wind amid heavy downpour. Hone is moving west at 8 mph and is expected to continue in that direction with a possible increase in speed in the coming days.
