Director Zoë Kravitz explains that ‘Blink Twice’ highlights the challenges women face navigating the absurdities of the world.

Zoë Kravitz is making her directorial debut with the thriller “Blink Twice,” which is being compared to “Get Out” for its deep cultural analysis, but centered on women and the theme of power. The film follows cocktail waitress Frida, played by Naomi Ackie, who gets caught up in the world of billionaire Slater King, portrayed by Channing Tatum, on his private island. The movie explores the abuse of power and societal expectations of women, with eerie and creepy undertones throughout.

Kravitz wanted to highlight the absurdity of what women are expected to do in society, such as smiling through trauma and being expected to communicate through expressions. Ackie’s portrayal of Frida, displaying a range of emotions, is pivotal to conveying this message. The character of Slater King, despite being charming, also hints at the abuse of power that women often face. However, Kravitz emphasizes that the story is not just about high-profile men like Jeffrey Epstein or Harvey Weinstein, but about the broader issue of power dynamics and mistreatment of women in society.

The film took nearly five years to complete, with Kravitz and collaborator E.T. Feigenbaum working on the script before Kravitz decided to direct it herself. She wants to showcase the pervasive issue of power dynamics and mistreatment of women, not confined to just billionaires or celebrities, but applicable to anyone in a position of power. “Blink Twice” serves as a timely reminder of the importance of addressing these issues and the complexity surrounding power dynamics in society.
