Mayor LaToya Cantrell of New Orleans, a Democrat, is facing fresh corruption allegations amid an FBI probe into her actions in office. It has been reported that Cantrell may face charges for allegedly receiving gifts in exchange for firing a high-ranking city official. The investigation has also brought attention to police officer Jeffrey Vappie, who is under scrutiny for being paid for hours he allegedly did not work, as well as allegations of a romantic affair with the mayor.
Cantrell, who became the first woman elected as mayor of New Orleans in 2018, has denied all allegations against her. However, insiders with knowledge of the investigation believe that charges may be imminent. The probe has also expanded to include accusations of gifts received from a contractor, Randy Farrell, which allegedly influenced decisions made by Cantrell in her official capacity.
Additionally, Cantrell was required to pay back almost $30,000 to the city after violating its policy by upgrading her flights to first class. The mayor’s alleged extravagant spending, including significant hotel bookings and luxury travel accommodations, has raised further questions about her conduct in office.
As the investigation continues, both Cantrell and Vappie continue to deny any wrongdoing. It remains to be seen what charges, if any, will be brought against them as prosecutors work to gather evidence and build a case against the mayor and her associates.
