A video circulating on social media shows Canton, Ohio, police surrounding a man, Jaemiier McElroy, who was kicked to the ground by officer Brandon Momirov. The incident occurred after police responded to reports of an argument. McElroy was hospitalized and remains in pain. Momirov’s actions are under review, but he remains employed. McElroy and two others were arrested for obstructing official business and resisting arrest.
Attorney Bobby DiCello is representing McElroy and is also working on six cases of alleged police violence involving Canton officers, including the deaths of James Williams, Zachary Fornash, and Frank Tyson. DiCello described a pattern of violent incidents involving Canton police officers mistreating civilians.
Canton Police Chief John Gabbard defended the officers, citing their dedication to reducing violence. However, DiCello criticized the statement as “laughable,” pointing out the alarming frequency of violent police incidents in Canton since 2022.
The incidents involving Canton police officers include the use of excessive force, leading to deaths and serious injuries. DiCello believes that civilians are being treated like “enemy combatants” by some law enforcement officers in Canton.
Canton police have not responded to requests for comment on these incidents. The attorney’s concerns highlight a troubling trend of police violence in Canton in recent years.
