The war in Ukraine entered its 914th day with intense fighting and developments on Tuesday, August 27, 2024. Russia targeted Ukraine’s energy infrastructure with drones and missiles, resulting in at least seven deaths and severe damage. Ukraine’s Air Force commander reported bringing down many missiles and drones launched by Russia, calling it the most massive attack since the invasion began in 2022. The US condemned the attack, and Poland reported a possible drone entering its airspace during the bombardment.
In central Ukraine, a Russian missile struck a building in Kryvyi Rih, killing one person and injuring four. A missile hit a hotel in Kramatorsk, injuring a Reuters journalist who is in critical condition. Russia also reported strikes on Ukrainian forces in the Kursk region and repelled attacks in Sumy.
The International Atomic Energy Agency announced an inspection of the Kursk nuclear power plant due to the “serious situation”. In Russia’s Saratov region, four people were injured in a Ukrainian drone attack.
In politics and diplomacy, President Joe Biden and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi discussed the war in Ukraine. Modi reiterated India’s support for peace and stability in the region. A French citizen accused of collecting military information in Russia will face trial starting on September 3.
Ukraine announced the development of a new long-range weapon, the Palianytsia, to strike deep into Russia in response to the ongoing conflict. Russia was the only member to skip a UN Security Council meeting focused on international humanitarian law, calling it a “waste of time”.
