The United Nations has been forced to evacuate its humanitarian aid hub in the Gaza Strip for the second time since the start of the war. The Israeli military issued new evacuation orders, shutting down the main UN operations center. Despite the challenges, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric stated that aid operations in Gaza are continuing with the limited resources available. The recent evacuation orders have affected multiple UN warehouses and facilities, along with staff accommodations in the region.
UN safety and security chief Gilles Michaud emphasized the importance of staying in Gaza to provide humanitarian aid, especially with a polio vaccination campaign scheduled to begin soon. However, the latest evacuation orders have disrupted aid operations for the UN and other humanitarian organizations. The International Rescue Committee called for the protection of civilians and uninterrupted humanitarian access in the region.
The conflict in Gaza began with Hamas fighters storming Israeli communities last year, leading to severe casualties and displacements. Israel’s military response has caused widespread devastation and loss of life in the Palestinian enclave. Despite the challenges and threats, the UN remains committed to delivering aid to the people of Gaza and addressing the dire humanitarian situation.
