ICE detains undocumented immigrant suspected of murder of New Orleans journalist: ‘Tragic’

Louisiana authorities have arrested Jorge Alberto Martinez-Sanchez, an undocumented immigrant, for allegedly causing the death of WGNO news producer Mark Deane in a car accident. Martinez-Sanchez was taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials during his court hearing for negligent homicide charges.

The incident occurred on a bridge near New Orleans, where Martinez-Sanchez hit Deane’s motorcycle, causing him to be fatally injured. Martinez-Sanchez was speeding and driving without a license at the time of the accident. Deane was declared dead at the scene and Martinez-Sanchez was subsequently arraigned on charges related to the incident.

During the arraignment, a judge ordered Martinez-Sanchez to be held without bond due to his undocumented status and rejected visa application. However, Martinez-Sanchez’s attorney plans to appeal the decision and seek bond for his client.

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill described the situation as “heartbreaking” on social media, emphasizing that Martinez-Sanchez is an “illegal alien.” Governor Jeff Landry blamed the Biden administration for the tragic accident, vowing to fight against what he described as “radical immigration policies.”

The incident has sparked debate surrounding immigration policies and enforcement, with ICE officials taking action against Martinez-Sanchez for his alleged involvement in Deane’s death. The case remains under investigation as authorities work to determine the appropriate course of action moving forward.
