Louisiana Legislature Approves $75 Million for College Maintenance Projects
The Louisiana Legislature has approved a list of 270 deferred maintenance projects across the state’s four college systems, with estimates indicating a backlog of over $2 billion. Colleges will have access to $75 million in funding to begin addressing these maintenance needs. The projects, recommended by the college systems, include repairs and replacements such as HVAC units, roofs, elevators, fire alarms, sidewalks, and parking lots.
Commissioner of Higher Education Kim Hunter Reed stated that colleges will handle project management for these essential repairs. The approval of the projects follows the passing of two laws this year to provide funding. One law allocates a one-time payout of $75 million, while the other establishes a program for deferred maintenance and capital improvements, with bonds issued to cover the remaining costs.
Commissioner of Administration Taylor Barras emphasized the urgent need for these projects, citing dire issues with HVAC and structural systems that have been patched up for too long. State Senator Rick Edmonds expressed concerns about the projects not starting despite the availability of funding, urging the colleges to expedite the projects to demonstrate progress.
Reed acknowledged the importance of showcasing progress and instilling confidence in the Legislature to continue funding these essential projects. The approval of the deferred maintenance projects marks a significant step towards addressing long-standing infrastructure needs in Louisiana’s college systems.
