State Reps. Barbara Freiberg and Vanessa LaFleur, who both represent Baton Rouge, have been selected to participate in the prestigious Henry Toll Fellowship leadership training program hosted by the Council of State Governments. The five-day training will take place in Lexington, Kentucky next month and is known for its excellence in developing state government officials.
Freiberg, a Republican, expressed her gratitude at being chosen as a Toll Fellow and looks forward to the leadership development the program will offer. LaFleur, a Democrat who was elected in 2022 after working in state government as a policy and legislative director, believes that the networking skills she gains from the fellowship will enhance her ability to be an effective legislator.
Both legislators are relatively new to the House, with Freiberg being elected in 2019 and LaFleur winning a special election in 2022. Freiberg brings years of experience from the East Baton Rouge Metro Council and School Board, as well as from her career as a public school teacher. LaFleur’s prior work in state government has also provided her with valuable insights that she hopes will benefit her constituents in District 101 as she continues to serve in the Legislature.
The fellowship is a significant opportunity for the two legislators to further develop their leadership skills and expand their knowledge, ultimately helping them better represent their constituents and contribute to the state Legislature.
