A former sheriff’s deputy in Florida named Eddie Duran was charged with manslaughter in the fatal shooting of Air Force senior airman Roger Fortson. Duran was given a bond of $100,000 with conditions including no contact with the Fortson family. The incident occurred after Duran fatally shot Fortson while responding to a domestic disturbance call. Duran claimed self defense, but an internal investigation found his use of force was not justified. The body camera footage showed Fortson answering the door with a gun in his hand pointed towards the ground before getting shot multiple times by Duran. The Fortson family disputed the claim that Duran was acting in self defense, as Fortson was alone in his apartment when he was shot. Prominent civil rights attorney Ben Crump is representing the Fortson family. The sheriff’s office initially stood by Duran’s actions but later fired him. The Fortson family expressed relief that charges were brought against Duran, but also expressed that no amount of justice will bring Fortson back. The case is ongoing, and the Fortson family has been advocating for transparency and accountability in the investigation.
