Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz has overseen the deportation of 28 Afghan nationals back to Afghanistan, marking a significant move in the country’s stance on foreign-born criminals. The deported individuals were described as “convicted criminals,” though specific details on their offenses were not disclosed.
This is the first time Germany has deported Afghan nationals to their homeland since the Taliban regained power in 2021. Due to the lack of diplomatic relations with the Taliban, the German government had to navigate alternative channels to facilitate the deportations.
The decision to deport the individuals comes in the wake of a deadly knife attack in Solingen that resulted in three deaths and eight injuries. The suspect, a Syrian citizen named Issa Al H., had previously applied for asylum in Germany and was supposed to be deported to Bulgaria last year but went missing to avoid deportation. He has now been arrested on suspicion of murder and ties to a terrorist organization.
The Islamic State militant group has claimed responsibility for the attack, stating that it was carried out to avenge Muslims in Palestine. In response to the increasing threat posed by such incidents, Chancellor Scholz has vowed to resume deportations of criminals from Afghanistan and Syria.
Interior Minister Nancy Faeser has also announced plans to tighten knife laws in Germany and streamline the deportation process for convicted criminals. This move reflects the government’s commitment to maintaining security while sending a clear message that criminal behavior will not be tolerated.
