Europe stands by us, declares Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado

Venezuela’s opposition leader, María Corina Machado, spoke with Euronews about the European Parliament’s recognition of Edmundo González as the president-elect of Venezuela. Machado described the resolution as “historic” and emphasized that “Europe is with us” in the fight against Nicolas Maduro’s regime. She stated that the future of Venezuela is critical for European security and called on the EU to play a pivotal role in ending the authoritarian regime.

While praising the European Parliament’s decision, Machado urged the Spanish government to take further action and recognize González as the legitimate president of Venezuela. She pointed out that Spain’s own Congress and Senate have already acknowledged González’s presidency, and called for Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to follow suit. Machado believes that Spain and other European countries have a responsibility to stand up for democracy in Venezuela.

In addition to political developments, Machado also addressed the recent arrests of nationals from Spain, Czech Republic, and the US in Venezuela for allegedly plotting to assassinate Maduro. The authorities of these countries have denied the accusations, adding a layer of complexity to the political situation in Venezuela.

Overall, Machado’s interview with Euronews sheds light on the ongoing struggle for democracy in Venezuela and the role of European countries in supporting the opposition movement. The recognition of González as president-elect by the European Parliament signals a growing international consensus against the Maduro regime.
