In a bid to improve integration, Sweden is considering paying migrants to return to their countries of origin. This move comes amidst ongoing debates and disagreements about how to manage migration within the EU. German Green MEP Sergey Lagodinsky, Dutch liberal MEP Brigitte van den Berg, and Slovenian conservative MEP Matej Tonin discussed various approaches to addressing migration issues within the EU. In response to a recent terror attack in Germany, border checks have been reinstated, while the Hungarian government has threatened to send irregular migrants to Brussels.
Matej Tonin emphasized the importance of swiftly returning those who do not have a right to stay in the EU in order to protect external borders. However, Sergey Lagodinsky argued that diversity in Europe is working well and that migration should not be seen as the root cause of issues within the EU. He warned against framing migration as a populist issue, describing it as a “poisonous cocktail.”
The panel’s discussions shed light on the complexities surrounding migration policy within the EU and the different perspectives held by various member states. As the EU continues to grapple with these challenges, finding common ground and effective solutions will be crucial in addressing migration issues and promoting integration.
