The Chicago White Sox suffered their 121st loss of the season, the most in MLB history, after falling 4-1 to the Detroit Tigers on Friday. Despite winning the American League Central division in 2021 with 93 wins, the team has been on a decline, winning only 81 games in 2022 and 61 games last season. With only 39 wins so far this season and two games left to play, the White Sox have struggled offensively, ranking near the bottom in many statistical categories including hits, runs, home runs, batting average, runs batted in, total bases, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage.
First baseman Andrew Vaughn has the highest batting average on the team at .248, but it ranks 87th in the league. The White Sox had a rough start to the season with a 3-22 record in their first 25 games, the worst in franchise history. On August 5, the team lost their 21st consecutive game of the season, setting another franchise record and becoming the first team since 1988 to lose at least 21 games in a row. While they won nine games in both May and June, the team only managed to win seven games combined in July and August.
Overall, the White Sox have had a disappointing season marked by offensive struggles and a historic number of losses, surpassing the previous record set by the New York Mets in 1962.
