Live coverage of the women’s elite race at the 2024 Cycling Road World Championships

he UCI Women’s Road Race World Championships in Switzerland saw Tiffany Keep of South Africa struggling to catch the leading trio, Caroline Baur of Switzerland, Sara Martin of Spain, and Nina Berton of Luxembourg. As the riders faced challenging weather conditions, with rain and cold temperatures, defending champion Lotte Kopecky stayed near the front of the main bunch to avoid trouble.

The race began with a minute of silence in memory of Muriel Furrer, a young Swiss cyclist who tragically passed away during a race the previous day. Despite the somber mood, the race continued as competitors navigated the difficult course with extra safety measures in place following the accident.

Favorites for the race included Kopecky and Demi Vollering of the Netherlands, both fierce competitors usually on the same team. With a wide-open field of strong contenders, including Olympic gold medalist Kristen Faulkner of the USA and Giro D’Italia Women winner Elisa Longo Borghini of Italy, the race promised to be an exciting and competitive event.

Despite the challenging conditions, the riders pressed on, representing their countries and striving for victory in the prestigious event. The race, which covered 154km with challenging climbs, showcased the talent and determination of the women cyclists as they battled against the elements and each other for the ultimate prize.
