Marine’s remains finally laid to rest after 82 years – WWLTV.com

After 82 years, the remains of a Marine who was killed in action during World War II have finally been laid to rest. Private Earl Joseph Keating was just 22 years old when he died on November 22, 1943, during the Battle of Tarawa in the Pacific. His remains, along with those of several other Marines, were discovered on the island of Betio in the Republic of Kiribati in 2019.

Keating’s remains were positively identified through a combination of DNA analysis, dental records, and anthropological evidence. His family was notified and plans were made to bring him home for a proper burial. On August 22, a funeral service was held at St. Benilde Catholic Church in Metairie, Louisiana, where Keating’s family members, fellow Marines, and community members gathered to honor his sacrifice.

Keating was finally laid to rest with full military honors at Southeast Louisiana Veterans Cemetery in Slidell. His flag-draped casket was escorted by a procession of motorcycles, Patriot Guard Riders, and law enforcement officers. A rifle salute was performed, Taps was played, and Keating’s family was presented with the American flag that had covered his casket.

The emotional ceremony was a fitting tribute to a young Marine who gave his life in service to his country. Keating’s family expressed their gratitude for the closure and peace that came with finally being able to bury their loved one. The Marine Corps also paid tribute to Keating, recognizing his sacrifice and the sacrifices of all service members who have given their lives in defense of freedom.

The burial of Private Earl Joseph Keating serves as a reminder of the enduring legacy of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. His memory will continue to live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and fellow Marines.
