Ugandan Activists Speak Out Against Harmful Abortion Laws: ‘It’s Unnecessary Loss of Life’

Moses Odongo, a public health advocate in Uganda, was devastated when his 14-year-old cousin Christine died while attempting an unsafe abortion. This tragedy highlighted the consequences of Uganda’s restrictive abortion laws and lack of access to reproductive health services. The ambiguity surrounding abortion legislation in Uganda has led to confusion and fear among both women seeking abortions and doctors providing care. As a result, many women resort to dangerous methods to terminate pregnancies, leading to high rates of maternal mortality in the country.

In response to these challenges, activists and organizations in Uganda are marking International Safe Abortion Day with grassroots initiatives to raise awareness about the dangers of unsafe abortion and provide information on reproductive health services. However, they must navigate a challenging cultural context and opposition from religious and political leaders who advocate for more restrictive abortion policies.

Despite the risks and stigma associated with advocating for safe abortion, activists like Odongo and Irene Nakate, a sex worker, are committed to raising awareness and providing support for women in need. They believe that clear legislation, access to reproductive health services, and community education are essential to preventing unnecessary deaths and ensuring the health and well-being of women in Uganda. International Safe Abortion Day serves as a reminder of the ongoing battle for reproductive rights and the need for bold advocacy to protect women and girls in the country.
