A former Louisiana State Police sergeant has been arrested for alleged wrongdoing while working at a Walmart in Gretna. The ex-sergeant, Franklin Smith, is accused of “skip scanning” items at the self-checkout register to avoid paying for them. Skip scanning is a technique where employees scan some items but intentionally skip scanning others to steal them.
The arrest came after Walmart’s Asset Protection team conducted an investigation into the matter. They discovered video evidence showing Smith engaging in skip scanning multiple times while at the self-checkout register. Smith’s actions resulted in the loss of over $1,000 worth of merchandise over a period of several months.
Smith was ultimately arrested and booked with theft under $1,000. He was not at the store in an official capacity at the time of the incidents. Smith resigned from his position at the Louisiana State Police prior to his arrest. The Louisiana State Police have confirmed that Smith was previously employed as a sergeant with the agency.
According to Walmart, they take theft and fraud very seriously and will take appropriate action when such conduct is discovered. The company worked closely with law enforcement in this case to ensure that justice was served.
The incident serves as a reminder that even those in positions of authority are not above the law. Smith’s actions have not only resulted in criminal charges but also a tarnished reputation. This case highlights the importance of accountability and integrity in all aspects of life.
