Former LAPD detective who concealed murder for decades denied parole, overturning previous ruling

A former Los Angeles police detective, Stephanie Lazarus, who killed her romantic rival, Sherri Rasmussen, will not be paroled after an earlier decision that found her suitable for release was reversed. The decision came after a hearing before three commissioners from the California Parole Board. Lazarus, who evaded arrest for 23 years, was found guilty of the cold-blooded murder of Rasmussen, who was gunned down in her apartment in 1986. Lazarus, then an LAPD officer, entered Rasmussen’s condo, struck her in the head with a vase, and shot her three times in the chest. She then staged the scene to look like a robbery. DNA evidence later linked her to the crime, and she was arrested in 2009 and convicted in 2012.

Lazarus was found suitable for parole last November, citing her young age at the time of the killing and stating she did not pose a risk if released. However, Rasmussen’s family challenged this decision, stating Lazarus showed no remorse and questioning why the board relied on the state’s youthful offender law in her case. Lazarus claimed she did not intend to kill Rasmussen and did not turn herself in out of shame. Governor Gavin Newsom also stated that Lazarus had not taken full responsibility for the murder until she was caught. This, along with the governor’s letter, led another panel to further scrutinize the decision to release Lazarus, ultimately reversing the earlier grant of parole.
