Australian police are seeking to ban two pro-Palestinian protests set to take place in New South Wales on October 6 and 7. The decision comes one year after a terrorist attack by Hamas on Israel and Israel’s subsequent offensive in the Gaza Strip. Police stated that they are not satisfied that the protests can proceed safely and will seek to stop them through the state Supreme Court.
The Palestine Action Group Sydney, organizing one of the protests, called the move an attack on democratic rights and emphasized their right to demonstrate. They oppose the attempt to silence protests and believe in the importance of free speech and peaceful assembly.
This decision comes after anti-war protesters clashed with police in Melbourne last month, resulting in injuries to two dozen officers. The NSW Police Force’s first priority is ensuring the safety of participants and the wider community, while also supporting the rights of free speech.
The events surrounding the protests reflect ongoing tensions and conflicts related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The ban sought by the police raises concerns about the ability to express dissenting views and participate in peaceful protests in Australia.
