Republican Sen. JD Vance and Democratic Gov. Tim Walz clashed in a vice presidential debate covering economic policy, gun control, immigration, and school shootings. The debate, hosted by CBS News in New York City, focused largely on criticisms of their running mates, with little personal animosity between Vance and Walz. They both acknowledged that they believe their opponent wants to solve the issues discussed, despite their disagreements.
Walz admitted to flubbing a story about visiting Hong Kong during the Tiananmen Square protests, while Vance defended his past criticisms of Trump by claiming he was wrong and that Trump ultimately delivered for the American people. Walz attacked Trump’s economic record, linking it to the collapse of the economy during Covid-19, while Vance defended Trump’s economic policies and criticized the Biden-Harris administration’s economic record.
In discussing healthcare, Vance attempted to rewrite the history of Trump’s efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act, claiming that Trump worked in a bipartisan way to ensure Americans had access to affordable care, despite Trump’s numerous efforts to dismantle the ACA during his presidency. The debate allowed both candidates to present their arguments on various policy issues, highlighting differences between the Republican and Democratic tickets heading into the 2024 election.
