Gonia expressed his frustration in a video on social media, stating that the campaign did not have his permission to use his likeness. He is directing his followers to an online fundraiser for LGBTQ advocacy groups. Legal expert Mark McKenna believes it would be difficult for Gonia to sue for damages due to the political nature of the ad. Harris’ stance on transgender issues, including gender-affirming care for inmates, has been a topic of debate. While she opposed surgery for a trans woman in prison in 2015, she later expressed support for trans inmates receiving necessary care while incarcerated. The Trump campaign has not responded to Gonia’s claims. Gonia ended his video encouraging viewers to vote and “make America gay again,” referencing Trump’s slogan.
