Who are the candidates in the Tunisia presidential election and what is on the line?

The upcoming presidential election in Tunisia on October 6 has been marred by controversy and accusations of rigging in favor of incumbent President Kais Saied. Only two candidates have been approved to run against Saied, including left-wing nationalist Zouhair Magzhaoui, who is seen as a supporter of the president, and the jailed leader of the Azimoun party, Ayachi Zammel.

Zammel, who has been imprisoned since early September and received multiple sentences related to his candidacy, insists that the charges against him are false and politically motivated. Many other prominent politicians and party leaders who hoped to challenge Saied have been jailed or barred from running, leading to accusations that the electoral commission, ISIE, has become an extension of the presidency.

Public protests have broken out in Tunisia against the lack of free and fair elections and the crackdown on civil liberties. Despite criticism, President Saied continues to enjoy support from some disillusioned Tunisians who see him as a solution to the country’s problems caused by traditional politicians.

The elections have raised concerns about the state of democracy in Tunisia, as the controlled media landscape and limited choice of candidates cast doubt on the legitimacy of the upcoming vote. With widespread public disillusionment and a lack of independent judicial oversight, many fear that Sunday’s election will only result in a victory for the incumbent president.

The three candidates in the election include President Saied, Ayachi Zammel, who is running from prison, and Zouhair Magzhaoui, a supporter of the president who has defended his actions and criticized political Islam. The presidential election is seen as a crucial test for Tunisia’s democracy and the future of the country.
