Deadly Hurricane Milton Causes Devastation in Florida Retirement Community

A Hurricane Milton tornado swept through a Florida retirement community, causing significant destruction and multiple fatalities. Four people died in St. Lucie County, with at least some of the deaths occurring in the Spanish Lakes Country Club Village, a neighborhood for residents 55 and older. The tornado struck at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, before Milton made landfall on Florida’s west coast. There had been no evacuation orders for the area as the tornado hit before the impact of the hurricane was expected. Search-and-rescue teams are still working to find any individuals who may be trapped under rubble in the affected neighborhoods. The level of destruction from the tornado was described as the worst seen locally in decades, with one official comparing it to the devastation caused by hurricanes Frances and Jeanne 20 years ago. St. Lucie County Sheriff Keith Pearson reassured the community that search efforts will continue until every potential victim is found and rescued. The tornado caused widespread damage and loss of life in the area, highlighting the unpredictable and dangerous nature of severe weather events like hurricanes and tornadoes.
