China conducts military exercises around Taiwan to deter independence movements

China conducted large-scale military drills around Taiwan as a warning to “independence forces” on the island, following criticism of a speech by Taiwan President Lai Ching-te. The exercises, known as “Joint Sword-2024B,” involved the Chinese army, navy, air force, and rocket force and aimed to test joint operations capability. The Chinese National Defense Ministry stated that the drills were necessary to safeguard state sovereignty and national unity, with vessels and aircraft approaching Taiwan from different directions.

Taiwan’s National Defense Ministry condemned the war games as irrational and provocative. The island’s Mainland Affairs Council expressed disappointment in China’s disregard of the Taiwanese government’s goodwill, highlighting Taiwan’s commitment to democracy, freedom, and sovereignty. President Lai had stated in his National Day speech that Taiwan and China were not subordinate to each other, leading to criticism from Chinese officials who accused him of advancing Taiwan independence for selfish political interests.

Despite the increased military activities near Taiwan by China in recent years, most people in Taiwan believe that an invasion within the next five years is unlikely, according to a poll from Taiwan’s top military think tank. The ongoing tensions between Taiwan and China stem from differing views on sovereignty and the relationship between the two regions.
