A man posing as a utility worker to gain access to a Michigan home has been charged with murdering a man in a “gruesome” attack and tying up his wife. Carlos Jose Hernandez, 37, was arrested in Louisiana and faces charges of felony murder and unlawful imprisonment. He and another man were caught on doorbell camera footage claiming to be from a local energy company and were let into the house in Rochester Hills. The suspects tied up the wife, demanded money and jewelry, and duct-taped her husband, Hussein Murray, before killing him. The wife managed to call 911, leading to Hernandez’s arrest. Police are still searching for the second suspect. The couple owned a jewelry and pawn shop, leading investigators to believe the suspects may have targeted the house for valuables. Oakland County officials have condemned the “gruesome attack” and have charged Hernandez with the highest punishment possible for this type of crime. DTE Energy released a statement urging residents to ask for proper identification before allowing workers into their homes. The case serves as a warning to be cautious of imposters posing as utility workers.
