A New Jersey Transit train traveling southbound from Trenton struck a tree north of the Roebling Station early Monday morning, resulting in the death of the train operator and injuries to 23 passengers. There were a total of 42 customers on board at the time of the accident, with 19 passengers being accommodated by bus. New Jersey Transit Police are currently investigating the incident, and River LINE service is suspended between Florence and Trenton with substitute bus service in place. New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy expressed condolences for those affected by the tragedy and stated that his thoughts and prayers were with them. One passenger described the incident as like something out of a movie, noting that a gigantic tree was on the tracks and that several passengers were injured, with at least one person being taken away on a stretcher. The front of the train was completely smashed, as seen in NBC New York chopper footage. The severity of injuries sustained by passengers was mostly minor and non-life-threatening.
