Taiwan’s defense ministry reported a record 153 Chinese military aircraft were detected around the island during China’s Joint Sword-2024B drills. The drills were held as a warning against separatist acts following Taiwan President Lai Ching-te’s national day speech. Of the 153 aircraft, 28 crossed the sensitive median line of the Taiwan Strait. Other areas of activity included near Taiwanese air bases and in the South China Sea near the Pratas Islands. The ministry also noted the presence of 14 Chinese navy ships and 12 official ships. Premier Cho Jung-tai expressed concern over the drills, stating that they disrupt peace and stability in the region. Taiwan’s government rejects China’s territorial claims and asserts that only the people of the island can determine its future. The surge in Chinese military activity highlights the tensions between Taiwan and China, with Taiwan’s government emphasizing the impact on the entire region and international navigational rights and peace.
