North Korea has blown up sections of an inter-Korean road on its side of the heavily militarized border between the two Koreas, causing tensions to escalate on the Korean Peninsula. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff reported that parts of the road north of the military demarcation line were destroyed, prompting Seoul to increase surveillance and readiness. The North accused its rival of sending drones over its capital, Pyongyang, which it claimed dropped anti-North leaflets and could lead to armed conflict. South Korea’s military denied involvement in the alleged drone activities. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un held a meeting with defense and security officials to discuss a response to the perceived provocation. The situation remains tense as both sides engage in a war of words and military preparations.
