Louisiana State Trooper Sentenced to Probation for Involvement in Ronald Greene’s Death

Former Louisiana state trooper, Kory York, avoided jail time by pleading no contest to reduced charges in the 2019 death of Ronald Greene, a Black man who died after being beaten while in police custody. York initially faced felony charges of negligent homicide and malfeasance in office, but opted to plead to eight counts of misdemeanor battery in exchange for one year of probation. Despite the plea, his lawyer clarified that this is not an admission of guilt.

The case against York and four other officers who were also charged in Greene’s death sparked protests and a federal civil rights investigation. The family of Mr. Greene, who gathered in court for York’s trial, expressed their dissatisfaction with the plea agreement. Greene’s mother, Mona Hardin, and another family member spoke in court, requesting the judge to not approve the plea deal, arguing that they should have more say as victims of the case.

John Belton, the district attorney for the Third Judicial District of Louisiana, did not immediately comment on the outcome of the plea agreement. Despite the family’s objections, York’s lawyer hailed the plea as an “outstanding result.” The case has raised concerns about accountability and transparency in law enforcement and has underscored the ongoing issues surrounding police brutality and systemic racism in the United States.
