Louisiana Poison Control is reporting a concerning trend of children being hospitalized after consuming THC-laced candy. Despite an age restriction of 21 for purchasing such edibles, kids are still able to access them through parents or older friends. The number of cases has been steadily increasing over the years, with 128 reported so far in 2024.
Dr. Mark Ryan, Executive Director of Louisiana Poison Control, warns of the dangerous effects THC-laced candy can have on children, including dizziness, increased heart rate, hallucinations, and cognitive impairments. Although no deaths have occurred from these incidents, the symptoms can be severe. The Louisiana legislature legalized THC edibles in 2022, but recent legislation has imposed new restrictions, such as reducing the potency of THC per serving.
Parents are urged to be vigilant and keep such products out of reach of children. In the event of an emergency, individuals can seek help through the Louisiana Poison Control website or by calling 1-800-222-1222. Recent incidents involving students from a school in Baton Rouge highlight the importance of heightened awareness and education surrounding the risks of THC-laced candies. Lawmakers are expected to address further changes to existing laws during the next legislative session in April 2025.
