New Orleans Safety and Permits Department Receives Low Ratings | Local Politics

Mayor LaToya Cantrell’s administration is set to make significant changes to the Department of Safety and Permits following a critical report by an outside consultant. The report highlighted issues such as lack of accountability, mismanagement, and disorganization within the department. This comes in the wake of the 2019 Hard Rock hotel collapse, which revealed corruption among some inspectors.

Recent personnel changes include the termination of two senior inspectors accused of misconduct, including false inspection reports and self-inspecting properties. These terminations are part of a series of disciplinary actions taken by the administration over the past year.

Reforms being implemented include creating a single point of contact for permit applications and improving customer service and enforcement in the department. Despite previous negative assessments of the department’s performance, the Matrix report reveals continued challenges with permitting procedures and lack of accountability.

Mayor Cantrell’s administration promises to address these issues and improve the department’s efficiency in serving residents and businesses. City Council President Helena Moreno expressed frustration over long-standing problems within Safety and Permits and hopes the new report will lead to necessary changes.

The report identified ongoing chaos in inspection scheduling, with recommendations for standardizing the process to prevent falsified reports. The department is working on establishing online inspection scheduling capabilities to address these issues. Overall, the administration aims to streamline operations and improve services for residents and businesses interacting with the department.
