Chinese journalism is at a crossroads, facing both unprecedented opportunities and challenges in the era of artificial intelligence (AI). This was the key topic discussed at the 57th Annual Conference of the Chinese Language Press Institute in Beijing. Wang Gang, deputy head of the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, highlighted the importance of traditional Chinese media embracing new technologies such as 5G, cloud computing, big data, and generative AI.
The conference also touched on the need for traditional media to adapt to technological changes in order to stay relevant in a rapidly evolving landscape. While some Chinese-language media outlets are struggling with shrinking markets and declining revenues, the adoption of AI could potentially revitalize their narratives and sustain their influence, particularly among younger audiences.
However, a recent survey conducted by the Xinhua Institute revealed that only slightly over 50 percent of media organizations are actively embracing generative AI. Challenges such as internal resistance, outdated workflows, and talent development are some of the reasons hindering more widespread adoption of AI in journalism. Concerns around false information and data privacy also limit optimism about AI’s integration into the industry.
Despite these challenges, there is a clear call for enhanced regulation and cooperation within the media industry to ensure that AI technologies are used effectively. The report suggests using AI as a tool to combat misinformation and manipulation, while establishing international industry standards for safety and reliability in journalism. Overall, elevating the level of professionalism within the industry is crucial for improving the quality of news reporting in the age of AI.
