Arizona produce company SunFed is recalling all sizes of its whole, fresh American cucumbers in 26 states and parts of Canada due to potential salmonella contamination. The cucumbers were sold from Oct. 12 to Nov. 26 and were packaged in bulk cardboard containers with the SunFed label. According to the company, the affected cucumbers may have been distributed to consumers through food service and retail outlets in states not included in the initial list. SunFed is working with authorities and the growers to determine the cause of the contamination.
Consumers are advised to check whether their cucumbers match those that were recalled and avoid consuming or distributing any suspicious produce. The company also recommends throwing out any recalled products to prevent potential illness. Earlier this year, a salmonella outbreak in South Florida was linked to recalled cucumbers from Bedner Growers Inc. and Thomas Produce Co., resulting in hundreds of illnesses and hospitalizations. Salmonella is estimated to cause 1.35 million infections in the United States each year, with serious and sometimes fatal consequences for vulnerable populations.
